Seymour Common Council meets Monday

The Seymour Common Council will meet at 7 p.m. Monday in the council chambers at city hall, 301-309 N. Chestnut St., Seymour.

Governmental Affairs Committee Chairman Brad Lucas will begin with updates on a request for a council attorney.

A second reading of ordinances include a rezone of property located at the 5000 block of U.S. 31 by applicants Rose Acre Farms, and amending Seymour City Code on application procedures for solicitors and itinerant merchants.

An ordinance will be introduced to rezone a property located at 304 Highlawn Avenue from R-1 to R-3 by applicant Medaris Properties LLC, to build multi-family structure apartments. This request was given no recommendation from the Seymour Plan Commission on a 5-5 vote at a previous meeting. City Council will make the final decision.

Resolutions to be introduced include the City Council of Seymour to opt out of the establishment of a Merit system for the Seymour Police Department and the Seymour Fire Department.

A merit system is the process of promoting and hiring government employees based on their ability to perform a job, rather than on their political connections. The process is designed to ensure fair and impartial hiring, promotion and discipline decisions for public safety departments.

A new Indiana law, House Enrolled Act No. 1016, aims to encourage more communities to adopt merit boards for police and fire departments by 2025.

Merit systems also protect employees from discrimination, improper political influence and personal favoritism.

The meeting is open to the public and press. Enter through the door along Third Street.
