Tornadoes go 1-1 in Johnson County tournament

GREENWOOD — The Jackson County Tornadoes split their games in a softball tournament hosted by Special Olympics Indiana Johnson County on Aug. 3 at Center Grove Lassie League in Greenwood.

In their first game, the Tornadoes lost to the Johnson County Dodgers 6-5. The Tornadoes led 3-0 after one inning, but the Dodgers came out on the good side of a scoring discrepancy in the second inning and later rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to win by walkoff.

Chaz Rothrock had a single, a double, a triple and two runs to lead the Tornadoes. Billy Allman had two singles and a run, while Josh Beals had an RBI single, an RBI double and a run, Montana Casto had two RBI singles, James Knight had an RBI single and a single and A.J. Engel scored a run.

The Tornadoes bounced back with a 12-1 win over the Marshall-Starke Counties Wildcats. They led 5-0 after one inning and 11-1 after two to pull out their first win of the season.

Rothrock had two singles, an inside-the-park home run, an RBI and three runs to again lead the Tornadoes.

Allman had a single and two runs, Beals had an RBI single, an RBI double and two runs, Tim Ashburn had two singles and two runs, Casto had two two-RBI doubles and two runs, Zack Campbell had a single and Todd Smith had a two-RBI single and a run.

Allman pitched both games and combined for eight strikeouts and 10 hits.

The Tornadoes are 1-4 on the season and will compete in the sectional Aug. 24 in Evansville.

Jackson County’s individual skills competition participants, Donald Bennethum, Dylan Bridges, Ethan Ellis, Rob Smith, Kayla Holley and Jenny Freeman, all received participation ribbons at the tournament. They also will compete in the sectional in Evansville.
