A traffic stop on Thursday evening in North Vernon led to the arrest of a motorist on weapon and other charges, police report.

The stop that led to the arrest of 54-year-old Andy L. Edgar of North Vernon started at about 8:15 p.m. when North Vernon Officer Nathan Vogel stopped a white Chrysler 300 for speeding in the 800 block of South State Street, according to a news release from Sgt. Isaac Barkes.

Edgar was arrested during that stop and faces Level 5 felony charges of intimidation with a deadly weapon and resisting law enforcement by drawing a deadly weapon; a Level 6 felony of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon; and Class A misdemeanors of operating while intoxicated-endangerment and operating while intoxicated, said Barkes who is the department’s public information officer.

While speaking with Edgar during the traffic stop, Vogel said he detected the odor of an alcoholic beverage inside the Chrysler and asked Edgar to step out of the vehicle, Barkes said.

Once out of the vehicle Edgar placed his hands in his pockets and was asked to remove his hands from his pockets, police said.

Edgar refused, and he was told he was being asked to remove his hands for officer safety. After being told again, Edgar removed his hands from his pockets.

Police said Edgar was given an opportunity to submit to Standardized Field Sobriety Tests which he refused. Edgar was then offered the opportunity to submit to a portable breath test which he agreed and completed.

The result of the portable breath test indicated Edgar’s breath sample was 0.08%. Edgar was read his Miranda Rights then admitted to drinking multiple beers prior to driving. He was then read Indiana Implied Consent and offered the opportunity to submit to a chemical test.

When offered the chemical test Edgar stated he was not going back to jail, police said.

Edgar then turned and removed a pistol from his pocket as he ran from Vogel and Officer Chris Allen.

Edgar resisting the officers resulted in Vogel injuring his hand prior to being Edgar being detained and searched.

Officers from the Jennings County Sheriff’s Department arrived on scene and transported Edgar to the Ascension St. Vincent Jennings Hospital for jail clearance.

A search warrant for Edgar’s blood was obtained as a result of the operating while intoxicated investigation, police said.

Edgar was treated by medical staff for his injuries and unrelated medical issue, while Vogel was treated for his respective injury.

Edgar was later transported to the Jennings County Jail.

Officers were assisted by personnel with Rescue 20, Jennings County Central Dispatch, Ascension St. Vincent Jennings Hospital, the Jennings County Jail and Lee’s Wrecker Service.
