Legion stages record breaker

Shields park was the scene of the largest celebration that has been staged in this city in the past several years Friday when local post No. 89 of the American Legion staged its Sixth Annual Independence Day celebration there. Some estimates place the attendance throughout the day about 7,500.

Funds for lighting at Freeman Field asked

An application which would result in providing a total of $20,000 for lighting the runways of Seymour’s municipal airport at Freeman Field at night was one of those submitted to the Civil Aeronautics Administration at Indianapolis prior to the close of the CAA’s 1948-49 fiscal year at midnight Thursday night.

Jet fighter planes to conduct exercise

Residents of northwestern Jackson County needn’t be concerned in the coming weeks if they spy Air Force fighter bombers swooping over the area.

A-37 twin jet fighter bombers, called “Dragonflies” will be piloted by members of the 434th Tactical Fighter Wing and its two flying squadrons, the 45th and 46th tactical fighter squadrons, based at Grissom Air Force Base near Peru, Air Force officials said.

Now entering the digital zone

In the waning days of the 20th century, the world still has everything on paper in front. Identification cards, credit cards with pictures and, of course, their driver’s licenses.

But more and more, things are going digital. Digital music, digital phones, digital television, digital clock and now there will be digital driver’s licenses.

That’s right, digital driver’s licenses. The Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles will begin issuing the new digitized driver’s licenses, learner permits and identification cards at the license branch in Brownstown.

“We have been working on it in a trial run for about a month and we had a testing stage,” Alpha Garrett, information specialist for the BMV in Indianapolis, said. “In the days ahead, we will be rolling it out slowly.”
