Isiaah Engle made it his mission to set the bar in hurdles for any Brownstown Central athlete, and he accomplished that goal.

Engle set the school record with a time of 40.14 in the 300-meter hurdles at the Bloomington North Regional back in May. He qualified for the Indiana High School Athletic Association state track meet with that performance.

He was selected as the Tribune boys’ track athlete of the year for his accomplishments. He spoke on holding the school record in 300-meter hurdles.

“It feels good having the record hopefully it stays for a while so I can look back on it one day,”Engle said. “It’s also cool giving the future hurdlers a new goal to chase.”

Engle also was a part of two regional qualifying relay teams in the 4×100, and 4×400-meter relay. He spoke on the chance to compete at the state meet in Bloomington last month.

“Asides from the weather conditions, the state meet was the most exciting race I ever ran in,” Engle said. “I didn’t do as well as I wanted but it was good to be able to end the season with the last race of the year.”

Engle won his sectional in the 300-meter hurdles, finishing second in the regional competition. Engle finished 26th with a time of 42.18 in the state finals at Robert C. Haugh Track Complex in Bloomington.

The now graduate spoke about his final season at Brownstown Central High School.

“My senior track season was great, I got every goal I set for myself,” Engle said. “As a team we won conference and also had a lot of guys make it out of sectionals as well.”

Engle was a part of a senior class of seven BCHS athletes. The team finished with an overall record of 75-10 and won the Mid-Southern Conference Title. They also finished in third place as a team in the sectional. The senior spoke about his favorite part about this year’s boys’ track team.

“My favorite part about the team this year was that everyone pushed each other, and everyone wanted to win but everybody was also always having a good time and having fun while we did it,” Engle said.

He is planning to enter the workforce and plans to start a business one day down the line. He was asked about the greatest lesson he learned from track, and how he can apply that to his adult life.

“The biggest lesson I’m going to take from the track is just to be disciplined,” Engle said. “If you show up, work the hardest you can, and get better every day, you will be successful with whatever you do.”

Twenty-one area athletes qualified for regionals in boys’ track this season, while seven were able to advance to the state finals at Indiana University.

Brownstown Central won conference, while Owls finished in third place in the Hoosier Hills Conference Meet.
