Owls boys’ track team holds awards banquet

The Owls had plenty to look back on after their 2023-24 boys’ track and field season, sending seven athletes to the IHSAA State Finals in Bloomington.

Mason Nugent, Kyle Hileman, Jesse Mellencamp, Devon Jackson, Ty Tormoehlen, Kylan Ellerbe, and Jaylan Johnson all represented Seymour at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex at Indiana University.

Head Coach Randy Fife spoke about the season for the Owls.

We did very well in our early phase of the season. We had a record of 6-0 in our dual and 3-way meets, also finishing first in the Shelbyville Golden Bear Invitational,” Fife said. “We also had a strong post-season showing, advancing two relays and one individual to the State Finals. The athletes worked hard and we showed good improvement over the course of the season.”

Johnson was named Most Valuable Athlete, finishing 14th in the state meet in the 400-meter dash. Johnson, along with Tormoehlen, Ellerbe, and Jackson finished 24th at the meet in the 4×400-meter relay. Jackson, Nugent, Mellencamp, and Hileman finished 22nd in the 4×100-meter relay.

The Owls also graduated 15 seniors after the season. Coach Fife spoke about the group who finished their Seymour careers’ this season.

“They are going to be successful. They know how to set goals and work hard,” Fife said. “I look forward to hearing about all of their future successes.”

The coach also spoke to his favorite part about coaching this group of young men.

“They are a fun group. They know how to combine hard work and a good time.” he said. “They respected their teammates and coaches.”

The team is bringing back a nucleus of talent from this year. The coach is excited to see how Seymour can build off the past season for the future.

“We have a lot of our top performers returning next year,” Fife said. “I look forward to seeing how much we can build on this years’success.”

Nugent, Hileman, Mellencamp, Jackson, Tormoehlen, Ellerbe, Johnson, and Dowell were all selected to the Hoosier Hills Conference team.

Tormoehlen, Bryce Peters, and Wes Proffer was selected as honorable mentions to the Academic All-State Team.
