The Owls held their boys’ golf banquet on Tuesday evening at the Shadowood Golf Course pavilion.

The team had their best performance in a home meet against Madison and Columbus North, shooting a 355 as a team in the meet.

Head Coach Jim Hoffman spoke about the improvement of the young Owls this season.

“We got a lot of experience this year with sophomores and freshmen playing, which really helped us,” he said. “I’m excited about having them back, they’ve already been working hard this summer on their game.”

The team struggled at the start but worked its way through the season, shaving off almost three-dozen strokes as a team during the season.

“We knocked off around 35 strokes from the beginning to end,” Hoffman said. “Which is good, but not good enough in our tough sectional. But I’m proud of the effort from this team. The weather also didn’t help us out much this season.”

Seymour finished in eighth place with a team score of 369 in the Bloomington Sectional at Cascades Golf Course.

Awards for the season were handed out.

Luke Baker took the low scoring average award, scoring 43.8 strokes on 9-holes and 86.8 strokes on 18-holes. Baker also was named to the Hoosier Hills Conference team as an honorable mention. He carded an 80 in the conference meet.

Kirby Tormoehlen won the Owl Award on the varsity team, while Cooper Murphy won the award for the junior varsity squad. Murphy and Luke Farher also were honored with senior awards.

Jay Herbert received the most improved award. The coach spoke about coaching this group of players.

“It’s a fun sport to coach, low pressure and laid-back. We want to win, sometimes we become a little over competitive,” Hoffman said. “We got a good group of young men, who want to get better. It’s easy to coach from that standpoint.

“It is time-consuming because you’re out here every night, but you must do that to get better. Me and Coach (Brian) Tidd enjoyed it and always have a good time doing it.”

Hoffman was then asked about next season since he will not lose any of his starting players.

“The biggest thing we’re looking forward to is that we have everybody back,” Hoffman said. “We don’t lose anyone who played in the sectional for us.”
