TERRE HAUTE — Competing in one of seven sports, 2,267 athletes from 61 counties converged on Terre Haute for Special Olympics Indiana’s largest annual competition.
From June 7 to 9, competition was in full swing for the 2024 Summer Games.
Sports offered during the 55th annual event included bocce, bowling, cycling, powerlifting, swimming, track and field and volleyball.
The Jackson County program had 20 athletes compete in track and field and six athletes and two Unified partners competed in bocce.

Nevaeh Ackeret: Second in 400-meter race, third in running long jump and third in 200-meter dash
Billy Allman: Second in standing long jump and second in shot put
Josh Beals: First in mini javelin throw and eighth in 50-meter dash
Averie Brennan: First in 800-meter walk, first in softball throw and second in 50-meter dash
Dakota Campbell: Second in shot put, third in mini javelin throw and sixth in 50-meter dash
Zack Campbell: Fourth in mini javelin throw, fourth in shot put and sixth in 100-meter dash
A.J. Engel: Second in 800-meter race, fourth in 400-meter race and fourth in running long jump
Jenny Freeman: First in tennis ball throw, first in 25-meter unassisted walk and second in 50-meter unassisted walk
Amanda Hamm: First in 50-meter unassisted walk, second in 25-meter unassisted walk and seventh in softball throw
Austin Hernandez: Fifth in shot put, seventh in mini javelin throw and eighth in 400-meter walk
Haley Hoener: First in mini javelin throw, second in shot put and second in 100-meter dash
Becky Klosterman: Second in tennis ball throw, third in 25-meter unassisted walk and third in 50-meter unassisted walk
James Knight: Seventh in softball throw and eighth in 50-meter dash
Owen Law: Second in mini javelin throw, fourth in shot put and fourth in 200-meter dash
Derrick Martin: Second in 400-meter walk, third in 800-meter walk and fourth in softball throw
David Perrin: First in 50-meter unassisted walk
Chaz Rothrock: First in 200-meter dash and second in running long jump
Alysha Sandlin: First in 400-meter walk, second in softball throw and fourth in 800-meter walk
Rob Smith: First in tennis ball throw and first in 50-meter unassisted walk
Darrell Stevens: Second in mini javelin throw, third in 400-meter walk and fourth in standing long jump

Tim Ashburn and Donald Bennethum: First after winning 11-6 and 12-2
Jamie Miller and Blake Oathout: First after winning 9-6 and 7-2
Dale Hickman and Ashleigh White: Third after losing 9-8 and winning 12-2
Summer Games is possible through the support of more than 1,500 event volunteers, sponsors and donors.
Thousands of coaches, chaperones and spectators also take part in Summer Games, making it a celebration of the spirit of Special Olympics, a nonprofit organization that offers year-round training and competition in Olympic-type sports for individuals with intellectual disabilities ages 8 and up.
