BEDFORD —The Trinity Lutheran girls’ tennis team advanced in Bedford North Lawrence with a 3-2 win over Brownstown Central Thursday.

The match began on Wednesday. It began raining hard about 20 minutes into the match with all five positions in their first sets before it was postponed until Thursday.

Trinity’s Drew Hubbard defeated Jenna Bolte 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, and Presley Meyer topped Avery Harrison 6-2, 6-0 at No. 3 singles.

Trinity’s Carson Bowling and Kiley Zabel were 6-2, 6-2 winners over Bella Brown and Kaitlyn Williams at No. 1 doubles.

Cougars Coach Jayme Lowe said, “We had great wins at one and three singles and at one doubles. All the wins were in two sets, and they were all consistent and just played to their strengths. Presley kept her head in the game and moved the ball. No. 1 doubles had strong serves and communication.”

Winning for Brownstown was Brynn Burton 6-3, 6-3 over Katie Malone at No. 2 singles, and Genna Preston and Audrey Scarlett 6-1, 6-2 over Emily Keller and Natalie Martinez.

Braves Coach Erik Stangland said, “Brynn won 6-3, 6-3, but it was the longest two-set match she’s had for a while. Our No. 2 doubles were able to pull out a good win. We had some competition at No. 1 doubles, but they just couldn’t get it together tonight to make it work.

“It’s been a good season in (Mid-Southern) conference. While this one hurt, at least we had a decent season for the conference.” The Braves were 6-8 overall, and 5-3 in third place in the MSC.”

Lowe said this was Trinity’s first win in the sectional since 2021. That year the Cougars fell to Seymour in the sectional championship.

Trinity took a record of 13-5 into Friday’s match against Bedford North Lawrence, and Seymour also played Jennings County on Friday. The winners advanced to the championship match today.
