CROTHERSVILLE — Medora came out on top in the Jackson County matchup on Monday evening with Crothersville.

The Lady Hornets took the win 60-48 behind a huge 32-point performance from Aaralyn Hackney.

Jenna Bowers added 15 points for Medora, and Brelee Underwood chipped in with nine points.

Head coach Malik Cook-Stroupe spoke about the win over the Tigers.

“I’m happy with the win. It was a hard-fought game. We got hit with some adversity, and we responded very well,” Cook-Stroupe said. “Plus, props to Crothersville for fighting hard for 32 minutes.”

The Medora coach also discussed the offensive performance from Hackney and Bowers, who combined for six three-pointers in the winning effort.

“Jenna and Aaralyn are producing at a very nice level for us,” he said. “They bring it every single game, and we rely on them to continue to do so. Aaralyn’s shot making tonight was great in the first half, and I think Jenna controlled the game as the point guard.”

Crothersville was led by senior Jojo Clay, who netted 16 points for the Tigers. Brooklyn Bottorff added 11, and Isabella Riley scored seven points.

Tigers head coach Curtis White spoke about the outcome of the county rivalry.

“We held their leading scorer to two below her scoring average but allowed Hackney to have 32,” White said. “I wish I would have switched my game plan a little sooner, but I’m proud of how the girls played tonight.”

The game started with a Crothersville basket with Clay hitting a mid-range jumper to make it 2-0.

Before you knew it, Hackney and Bowers each had hit threes, and the game went to 18-10 in favor of Medora after the first quarter.

The Hornets seized total control in the second quarter with Hackney and Bowers continuing to make the Tigers defense pay for not closing out in time.

Hayden Pilgrim hit a basket for Crothersville and then Jazlin Gibson knocked down two free throws to make it a 35-21 game at half.

As the second half started, Medora was off to the races with a quick 6-0 run to make it a 20-point game.

Clay then scored two baskets for Crothersville to reduce it to a 15-point deficit. Medora took a 50-32 lead with a few minutes remaining in the third until Clay went on another run to end the quarter. The score was 50-38 in favor of the Hornets.

Crothersville was able to cut the gap to single digits in the fourth quarter with Riley hitting a three to make it 50-41. Hackney continued her excellent shooting, however, hitting a huge three for the Hornets to make it 54-41.

Bottorff then rallied off two baskets for Crothersville to cut the lead to nine, but the Tigers couldn’t get any closer as Medora held on for the win, which stopped a two-game losing skid.

The Tigers competed with a ton of effort in the loss, and White liked the improved effort from the team.

“I told them that this is showing how far they have come in a short period of time. I am very proud of their hard work,” he said. “I asked the team how they thought the season would have went if we had played this hard all year. They all agreed it would have been much different.”
