The Owls kicked off the gymnastics season Monday evening, defeating Owen Valley in a close battle.

Seymour picked up the 95.4-95.0 victory over the Patriots.

Owls head coach Angie Villarreal spoke on the win over Owen Valley.

“I am very happy with the outcome,” she said. “We did have mistakes tonight, but our goal was to hit a 95 or higher and have clean routines. The girls did that.”

Mia Dailey led the way, winning the overall meet individually with an all-around score of 33.450. Dailey took first in three of the four competitions.

She was asked about her performance during the first meet of the season.

“I felt like the meet went really well, and we got some of the nerves out of our systems,” Dailey said. “We were able to hit our goal of 95 as a team score, and we’ll have to continue working to improve every time we compete.”

Dakota Worthington of Owen Valley finished in second place, and Macie Raymond-Schlefo of the Patriots and Ella Brock of Seymour tied in fourth place with scores of 30.750.

Eliza Gentry of Owen Valley took fifth place, and Vivian Newkirk of Seymour finished sixth. Teammate Gillian Bumbleburg finished in 8th place.

Brock scored 8.5 on vault, 7.6 on beam and 8.2 in floor.

Newkirk recorded 8.05 on vault, 7.70 on beam and 7.95 on floor.

The freshman spoke about her first varsity meet for the Owls.

“I’m glad I got the nerves out. It was definitely different than the club atmosphere that I’m used to,” Newkirk said. “I hope I can continue to improve throughout this season. I’m going to work on improving my skills and cleaning up my routines and a few other things that should help me.”

Dailey also was asked what she needs to improve on.

“I really need to work on my nerves when I compete,” she said. “They can get the best of me at times. I need to work on those and continue making my routines cleaner. I think we did well in our first meet, and I’m happy with it.”

Villarreal also spoke about the performance from the team.

“Mia had a great first meet. She was very clean tonight, and she hit routines. This is her second year, and it showed,” she said. “We had some nerves from the freshman tonight, and that’s OK. We expected it. Now, it’s getting those nerves under control and working on the mistakes the girls made tonight.”

Seymour improves to 1-0 on the season and prepares for a matchup Thursday night against Franklin Central at Gymnastics Lane in Seymour at 6:30 p.m.

“Going into Thursday night’s meet, the girls will focus on making corrections we see on the judges sheets,” Villarreal said. “We only have two practices, so we can’t change a lot, but we can make corrections. After this week, we will start adding in more difficulty to the routines now that we have worked through the nerves.”
