County unemployment rise slightly in November

Jackson County’s unemployment rate stood at 2.9% in November, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development’s latest report released Wednesday.

Overall, 22,184 county residents were on the job during the month. That’s 774 less than in November 2022 when 22,958 county residents were working. The jobless rate at that time was 2.6%.

The November rate, which is preliminary, was 0.1% higher than October’s final rate of 2.8%.

The number of county residents reporting they were looking for work in November was 674, compared to 605 who were looking for work during the same month a year earlier.

The county’s labor force was 22,858 in November which is 707 less than labor force of 22,958 during the same month in 2022.

The county’s unemployment rate for November was lower than the state’s rate of 3.4% and the national rate of 3.5%.

Other nearby counties and their preliminary unemployment rates for November were Bartholomew, 3.0%; Brown, 3.2%; Jennings, 3.3%; Lawrence, 3.7%; Monroe, 3.4%; Scott, 3.6%; and Washington, 3.2%.

Gibson County had the lowest rate in the state at 2.5% in November, and Howard County had the highest at 6.6%.
