A fatal crash on Christmas Eve claimed the life of a Seymour resident on the west side of the city.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. Sunday, emergency personnel responded to the intersection of Tipton Street and Community Drive, where Thomas Jones, 44, was unresponsive after his motorcycle collided with another vehicle.

Jones was transported to Schneck Medical Center in Seymour, where he was later pronounced deceased, according to a news release from the Seymour Police Department.

The initial investigation indicated Jones’ motorcycle was traveling westbound on Tipton Street when a 2008 Chrysler Town & Country, driven by Debra Spurgeon of Seymour, was turning south from Tipton Street toward a shopping center parking lot, entering the intersection at the same time and colliding.

A crash reconstructionist responded to the scene, and the intersection remained closed for approximately two hours, according to the news release.

Spurgeon submitted to a blood test, and toxicology results are pending at this time; however, alcohol or drugs are not suspected to be a factor, according to police.

Jackson County Emergency Medical Services and the Seymour Fire Department assisted police at the scene.
