Lutheran Dartball League announces return of scholarship program; Applications are due on Feb. 15

The Lutheran Dartball League will once again be presenting two scholarships at the end of this season.

The league used to award scholarships every year from 1996 to 2009.

In the fall of 1995, the Lutheran Dartball League was planning its 44th year of competition. The team captains decided it was time to give back to the community.

They initiated a Lutheran Dartball League college scholarship available to any student who was a member of one of the churches with teams currently in the league.

At the tournament in 1996, the league announced Jennifer Nigg of Immanuel Lutheran Church as the winner of the first $500 scholarship.

In the fall of 2001, Trinity Lutheran High School became a reality after years of planning. Classes the first year were held at First Baptist Church in Seymour before they were moved to the new school on the city’s northeast side.

The league voted to add a $250 scholarship to a student attending Trinity. The league was honored to present the first scholarship awarded to a student at Trinity.

The league continued to award two scholarships every year until 2009 when the scholarship program was dropped.

At the league organizational meeting in September 2023, the captains voted to once again make two scholarships available to deserving students.

The scholarships being awarded are a $500 college scholarship and a $250 Trinity Lutheran High School scholarship.

From 1996 to 2009, the league awarded 14 $500 scholarships and eight $250 scholarships.

Guidelines for the scholarship program are:

1. The college scholarship is available to any boy or girl who is a member of one of the churches with a team/teams currently in the league who will be enrolled in college in the fall semester. The Trinity Lutheran High School scholarship is available to any boy or girl who is a member of one of the churches with a team/teams currently in the league who will be enrolled in Trinity in the fall (a current eighth-grader or high school student who plans to attend Trinity in the fall).

2. Scholarship will not be awarded based on grades or financial need. Scholarship applications will be judged on the student’s activities in their church, school and community.

3. Applications will be judged by a panel of ministers representing the churches in the league.

4. Winners will be announced at the league tournament on April 1, 2024.

5. Applications must be turned in by Feb. 15, 2024.

6. Students may apply for the scholarship as many times as they wish but can only win each scholarship one time.

7. Applications may be picked up at the local church offices, at the schools or by contacting Bob Klosterman at 812-580-8394 or Jeff Hubbard at 812-528-1501.
