It was an eventful Friday evening in Seymour.with the Lady Owls hosting Batesville inside Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium for a matchup of girls hoops.

Both teams were seeking their fourth win of the season, coming in with 3-1 records.

Seymour defeated Southport, Salem and Greenwood but lost to Silver Creek. Batesville beat Hauser, Union County and North Decatur, dropping its matchup with New Palestine on Nov. 4.

The Owls seized the momentum early, but went back-and-forth with Batesville, pulling away at the end to win 50-45.

Seymour head coach Jason Longmeier spoke about the outcome with the Bulldogs on Friday night.

“I thought we got out to a great start and had an opportunity to create some distance in the game, but then we got into foul trouble,” he said. “We kind of got stagnant in the first half, and I don’t think we ever got our rhythm back. I think we’re doing Batesville a disservice if you don’t give them the credit they deserve.”

The game started with the Lady Owls in total control, taking an early 12-4 lead. Two huge three-pointers from sophomore Emmy Munson helped Seymour with the lead. Batesville battled it’s way back into the contest, making it a 14-7 deficit at the end of the first quarter.

The Bulldogs grabbed some momentum in the second quarter, outscoring Seymour 14-11 to make it a 25-21 game at halftime.

Seymour senior Claire Marshall spoke about the team binding together and pulling out the win.

“It was a tough win. These games are tough for us, especially with the pressure on and the game being close. We got through it, and we executed when it was necessary,” Marshall said. “I think we have a high ceiling this year, and we need to keep up a positive attitude going forward.”

The second half started with a Sophie Skidmore basket to extend the lead. The sophomore drove right past the Batesville defender for an easy layup. She then made a defensive play with a steal to get Seymour running toward it’s basket, leading to a foul.

Batesville started to chip away at the small deficit, making it a two-point game with 5 minutes left in the third quarter.

A three-pointer then gave the Bulldogs the one-point advantage. Journee Brown then came back and took the lead back with a smooth finish for the Owls.

She was then fouled on the following possession and went to the charity stripe.

Brown then found Marshall for an easy basket to extend the lead to four, but the Bulldogs came right back with their own score. Brown was having her way with the Batesville defense, scoring the next basket for the Lady Owls, as well.

Kendall Sterling then picked up a steal and delivered an absolute dime to Skidmore, who scored. It was a picture-perfect bounce pass from the Seymour senior.

The quarter came to a close with each team scoring 11, but the Owls still clinched a four-point lead.

Batesville didn’t waste any time in the fourth quarter, scoring six straight points to take the lead.

Seymour didn’t let that stop them from coming right back and taking the two-point lead less than a minute later. The final 4 minutes dwindled down with Seymour hanging onto a 42-38 advantage over the Bulldogs.

Sterling then pulled out her charge card, taking the hit to force a Batesville turnover.

As the final minute was approaching, Sterling found Skidmore, who proceeded to hit the dagger from three to give Seymour a six-point lead.

The sophomore spoke about the shot that put the game away.

“We fought hard. It wasn’t as pretty as we wanted it to be,” Skidmore said. “It was great we hit the shots we needed to when it mattered most. I was fortunate to get a good look, and I knocked it down.”

Skidmore then found Brown off the inbounds pass to extend the lead to 47-39 with 28 seconds left in the game.

Brown led the way in scoring with 13, Sterling added 12 and Skidmore had 11 in the win. Sterling tried to get things going, but couldn’t find much success, she was unbreakable from the free-throw line, going 6-for-6 at the charity stripe. Sterling also recorded six assists, and four steals in the win.

Brown also recorded the most rebounds with five, and Marshall also grabbed five boards.

Sterling led the way with seven assists. She also had four steals with Brown having three. Brown and Skidmore also both recorded a block.

Seymour improved to 4-1 after the win and will now focus on playing Greensburg on Nov. 25 at 1:30 p.m.

The matchup with Greensburg will take place at Seymour High School. Longmeier spoke about the matchup with the Pirates.

“They are the real deal. They have got Leah West, who will be the best player we’ve played to this point,” Longmeier said.

“They’re going to look at this film and try to do a lot of what Batesville did. I thought the Bulldogs really had us frustrated tonight.”

The Owls JV team won its matchup with Batesville 48-29.
