Lloyd E. Scott Gymnasium had a basketball game inside of it for the first time of the new season on Saturday.

The Lady Owls came in fresh off a loss to Silver Creek on Friday night, looking to rebound against the Woodmen.

Seymour responded in a big way, getting out to a dominating 16-0 lead to end the first quarter. Greenwood finally scored in the first minutes of the second quarter but still trailed 20-2.

Seymour went on to win 62-24. Kendall Sterling and Journee Brown brought their A-games on Saturday. The efforts affected the Owls in their victory.

Brown recorded 23 points and nine rebounds in the win with Sterling recording 22 points and the same number of rebounds.

“It was a really good win,” Sterling said. “We had a lot of people step up, and we found some good looks after a tough loss last night. We did some good things today and got the win.”

“We really took advantage of a couple miscues by Greenwood,” Brown said. “My teammates kept feeding me the ball and getting me in good positions to score.”

Sterling shot over 50% on the day, creating offense with her scoring ability. She spoke about her teammates creating scoring opportunities throughout the game.

“My teammates make it easy for me,” Sterling said. “When the team is clicking and we’re hitting shots, it’s pretty easy when the team makes the right plays.”

Sterling also was asked about playing in front of Seymour fans at home for the first time all season.

“It’s always exciting to play in front of our home fans, especially after starting the season with three straight road games,” she said.

The game was ugly for Greenwood from the start with the Owls seizing control in all aspects of the game. They built a lead and never looked back, taking a huge 30-point lead at halftime.

Owls head coach Jason Longmeier spoke about the dominating win.

“It was a good bounce-back win after losing on Friday,” he said. “Our game with Silver Creek was tiring mentally and physically. We had to turn around today and play with a few injuries. To see our kids come out and execute the way they did is what we needed to see.”

The second half began and Seymour didn’t let up, continuing to attack the basket, with Sophie Skidmore opening the third quarter with an easy layup.

Sterling then came right back with her own layup to extend the lead to 41-7. Sterling was on fire from range, nailing a three-pointer to put the Owls up 37 with four and a half minutes to go in the third quarter.

Brown then pounded the ball inside for an easy basket. She inserted her power into the Woodmen defenders all day long.

With the clock starting to tick off in the final minute of the third, Brown went up and made a close shot while fouled. She then swished the free throw for the and-one. It was Seymour’s day on the court, coming prepared to play.

The Owls then took a 40-point advantage going into the fourth quarter, leading 53-13.

The JV team downed Greenwood 43-28 to grab another win for the season. Seymour started its season strong with a 3-1 record.

Longmeier was asked about a fast start by the Owls.

“It’s what we expected, and it’s what we are. We have a ceiling to reach this season, and I’m excited about how the girls have started the season,” Longmeier said.

Seymour will now play Batesville on Friday at 7:30 p.m. with JV playing at 6 p.m.
