Braves and Tigers collide in class 2A heavyweight showdown; Both teams ranked top three in the class

Arguably, the biggest football matchup in Indiana features the third-ranked Braves, who face a mighty test on the road Friday.

Any time top-three programs meet, it’s expected to be a true clash of the titans.

That’s what it will feel like on Friday evening when Brownstown Central faces top-ranked Triton Central in the Class 2A Sectional 39 semifinal.

The Braves come off of an impressive 29-point win over Indianapolis Scecina, while the Tigers dominated Clarksville 41-6. The victory gave Brownstown coach Reed May his 300th win of his storied coaching career, and he is looking to add another one on Friday.

“They are a great team and have been ranked No. 1 for most of the year,” he said. “They have 16 returning players from last season, and their QB is going to Eastern Michigan. It will be a tough matchup. But we will be prepared to go up there and battle another talented Class 2A opponent.”

May was asked about his team’s second-half explosion last week against the Crusaders. At one point in the second half, the game was tied at 21. Brownstown then went on a 35-6 run to close the door on Scecina.

“I think we wore them out. I thought our defensive coaches called a great game, especially Clay Brown,” he said. “We made some great adjustments throughout the game, and offensively, I think we just wore them out, and we were able to come out with a win.”

Triton Central got the better of Brownstown in 2022 when the Tigers downed the Braves 24-19 in the sectional.

Brownstown does have history on its side, owning the all-time series over Triton Central with a 6-1 record.

The Tigers have been the talk of Class 2A all season with their only loss coming to Class No. 1 Indianapolis Lutheran.

Triton has looked untouchable in its other games, but Brownstown also has dominated all of its wins except one.

The Braves’ only loss of the season was at Seymour during the Jackson Bowl in September.

The winner of this matchup will be favored to win the sectional and beyond and will face Switzerland County (6-4) or Eastern (Pekin) (4-6) in the final on Nov. 3.

May also announced his players of the game against Indianapolis Scecina.
