Braves collide with Crusaders to open sectional on Friday

It’s officially time for postseason football with sectionals beginning on Friday.

Brownstown Central will square off with Indianapolis Scecina at Blevins Memorial Stadium. The matchup between two quality football programs will start at 7 p.m.

Last week was the final game of the regular season as the Braves finished with an 8-1 record, defeating Scottsburg 48-21.

Brownstown head coach Reed May spoke about the final regular-season game with the Warriors.

“We wanted to get back at them for last season. We also wanted to go into sectional on a winning streak,” he said. “Scottsburg is a quality football team, and we played well against them. It gives us some confidence heading into the postseason. Now, we focus on the sectional matchup with Indianapolis Scecina.”

Brownstown ended its season with an undefeated record of 7-0 in the Mid-Southern Conference. Everyone knows all of that goes out the window when postseason time arrives.

Indianapolis Scecina comes into the matchup with a 5-4 record following a 44-0 loss to a quality Class 3A opponent in Monrovia.

The Crusaders are battle-tested, already facing teams such as Indianapolis Lutheran and Triton Central. Scecina, which is a member of the Indiana Crossroads Conference, earned wins over Fort Wayne Concordia, Speedway, Covenant Christian, Beech Grove and Indianapolis Ritter.

Brownstown has dominated in all but one of its victories this season. It’s shaping up to be a Class 2A showdown in Braves Country on Friday evening.

May is focused on the task at hand for Brownstown.

“They are a great program and have done very well over a period of time,” he said. “We would’ve liked a better draw, but it is what it is. We’re hoping to come out on Friday and play well and move into the second round.”

May was asked about his keys to success in the opening round of the playoffs.

“Like any game, it always comes down to four or five big plays,” he said. “We just need to play hard and not turn the ball over on offense. If we continue to play well on defense and play smart, we have a shot at victory.”

The Braves junior varsity team also wrapped up its season Monday, dominating Scottsburg 38-3. Brownstown finished the season at 7-0, outscoring opponents 287-31 throughout the year.

The Braves starting defense only allowed one touchdown all season long.

May also announced his players of the game from the varsity win over Scottsburg.

Players of the game versus Scottsburg:

Offensive Back: Lane Zike

Offensive Line: Drew Shelton

Defensive Line/MLB: Ryan Branaman

Dime/Defensive Back: Chick Tiemeyer

Special Teams: Micah Sheffer
