Scott County men arrested in connection with burglary near Freetown

Two Scott County men were arrested Thursday in connection with a burglary reported Tuesday morning in the 3000 block of North State Road 135 in the Freetown area, police report.

Steven Andrew White, 29, and Nathaniel Kane Napier, 28, both of Scottsburg, face preliminary charges of burglary and theft of firearms, according to a news release from Jackson County Sheriff Rick Meyer.

Meyer said the charges against the pair stem from an investigation that started at 8:18 a.m. Tuesday when county Detective Sgt. Jesse Hutchinson and detectives Clint Burcham and J.L. McElfresh responded to the residence on a report of a burglary.

The complainant had video surveillance of the incident, which shows a person breaking a window and entering the home, Meyer said.

The suspects then took numerous guns and jewelry from the home and had more items, which they were possibly going to return and take, stacked up, the sheriff said.

During the investigation, police learned of a possible suspect in Scott County, and Jackson County Chief Deputy Dustin Steward and Lt. Adam Nicholson retrieved some of the stolen property and learned of the location of a second possible suspect, Meyer said.

On Thursday, officers returned to Scott County and located some of the clothing White and Napier had been wearing along with a bag containing a gun and other stolen items.

Both men were arrested and booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown on Thursday — White at 2:50 p.m. and Napier at 2:30 p.m. They continued to be held there Friday morning without bond pending initial court appearances.

Meyer said the investigation is ongoing, and further arrests are possible.

Crime Scene Investigator Bob Lucas and Meyer assisted with the investigation and arrests.
