The Jackson County History Center board has decided to postpone its annual Heritage Days event that was set for Sept. 8 and 9.

Margo Brewer said the center at 105 N. Sugar St., Brownstown, was open during the Jackson County Watermelon Festival on Aug. 4 and 5, and that was a success, as people took tours of the campus, dropped money in the donation jar and bought tickets for a quilt raffle. The plan is to be open during next year’s festival, too.

The center also is starting its annual fourth grade tours Sept. 12. Those will be done from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on five Tuesdays and Thursdays, giving fourth-graders around the county a chance to learn from various volunteers stationed around the campus.

The Pioneer Dinner is set for 6 p.m. Oct. 26 in the livery barn at the center. It will feature dinner catered by Pewter Hall and Jackson County Pioneer Society inductions.

Brewer said a few families already have submitted their Pioneer Society applications and will be honored, but it’s not too late for others to do so.

The society recognizes any person showing direct descent from someone living in Jackson County in one of four time periods. They are before 1820 (First Families), 1820 to 1850 (Founders), 1851 to 1880 (Settlers) and 1881 to 1910 (Builders).

Application forms are available at the genealogy library at the center. Volunteers are available to help people complete their applications. The library is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. For information, call 812-358-2118.

People will need to provide copies of sources of proof, including census records, vital records (births, deaths and marriages), land records, school records, church records, will or probate records, obituaries, military records, cemetery records, tombstone pictures, burial records, court records or naturalization records. Do not submit original documents.

The application and documents may be dropped off at the history center or mailed to 105 N. Sugar St., Brownstown, IN 47220.

The center also is open for genealogy library visits and campus tours during the same hours and days previously listed.
