Trinity Lutheran hosted Indianapolis Lutheran on Monday at 7 p.m. due to the heat wave around southern Indiana.
Multiple events were canceled due to the blistering heat, but the Cougars were able to get their soccer match in the books.
It would not go their way in the game, losing to Indianapolis Lutheran by the score of 4-1.
The game was physical, to say the least. Players left all they had on the field in the match.
“I’m proud of the amount of work we put in. We played tough, and I couldn’t be prouder of the guys,” head coach Todd Jack said. “They were a little deeper than we were. I also think we got a bit tired toward the end of the game.”
The first 20 minutes was physical, hard-nosed soccer. No scores were allowed for either side.
Indianapolis Lutheran broke the scoring drought in the 29th minute when Nate Hughes scored a goal for the Saints.
Peyton Pollert was lying out in the net for the Cougars other than that goal. Indianapolis Lutheran took the 1-0 advantage into halftime.
“He’s made some real long strides for us at goalie,” Jack said. “He’s not a soccer player by trade, but he’s a very athletic young man who excels in other sports. Peyton gives us his time and effort back there. He made a lot of tough saves for us.”
The Saints took a 2-0 lead in the second half before Trinity finally scored.
Kade Gillaspy scored the lone goal for the Cougars in the second half. Levi Pottschmidt recorded the assist for Trinity.
It would stay at 2-1 for the majority of the second period until the Saints added two final goals.
“We continued to press in the second half,” Jack said. “The weather didn’t do us any favors. Our guys were tired at the end of the game. The guys have been working hard, and I’m super proud of the way these young men competed.”
Trinity will now travel to Austin for a matchup today. The game is scheduled to start at 6 p.m.
