Indiana County Commissioners presented Indiana District 65 Rep. Chris May, R-Bedford, with the County Commissioners Outstanding Advocate Award.

“I’m honored to receive such an award, especially in recognition of my support for county commissioners across the state,” May wrote in a news release. “As a former county commissioner, I understand firsthand the significant role that commissioners play in county government. I was honored to chair the House Local Government Committee this past session, and I will continue advocating and pushing policy that elevates local government.”

District 65 includes all of Lawrence County, Carr Township in Jackson County and portions of Orange and Washington counties.

The award honors leaders, such as May, who have showcased their steadfast commitment to advancing the priorities of county executives across the state, according to the news release.

The award recognizes a uniquely high degree of leadership in promoting the important role of local leaders within the state.

“It is a pleasure to present the County Commissioners Outstanding Advocate Award to Rep. May,” said Stephanie Yager, executive director of Indiana County Commissioners. “He is an excellent example of a dedicated advocate for local government, both as a current elected state official and former county commissioner.”

In 2022, May was appointed to serve as chairman of the House Local Government Committee. Through his leadership on the committee, he has proven himself a committed advocate for local governments across Indiana, making him a prime candidate for this award.

“Congratulations, Rep. May, on this highly distinguished achievement in your career,” said Mark Heirbrandt, president of Indiana County Commissioners and a Hamilton County commissioner. “As the ICC president and a current county commissioner, I can attest to the hard work and continued success you have achieved thus far.”

The ICC will be announcing more awards to recognize achievements in local government advocacy throughout August.

According to its website, Indiana County Commissioners is a nonprofit organization established to provide the best education, leadership support and advocacy services for county commissioners to strengthen their influence throughout Indiana.
