Fair Diary: Staying busy with sheep

By Kiley Sons

Wednesday is always my favorite and busiest day.

The sheep show is on Wednesday. Seven years ago, I convinced my parents to buy my first sheep. Since then, we have increased our herd to about 20 sheep.

I started with crossbred sheep but quickly decided I wanted an unusual breed. Going to the sheep show at the state fair, we found a Texel breeder, and I bought my first Texel sheep. Texels are one of the exclusive meat sheep. They are also very docile and easy to work with.

I brought three ewes to the fair. Ellie Mae is my yearling. Rory and April are my ewe lambs. I sheared them on Sunday for the open sheep show, so I didn’t really have to do any shearing today. I just gave them a bath and put on their blankets so they didn’t get dirty. They also don’t have any fluffy leg hair. I don’t have to do any grooming of the legs, either. We won our class.

After the show, I walked through the building with my friends. I also ate at Pork Producers with Lainey and my mom. Looking forward to Thursday for the dairy goat show.
