Fair Diary: Keeping cool during the barrow show

By Kiley Sons

Tuesday was the big show day for Whitey.

Tuesday is show day for barrows. Some 4-H’ers do a lot of grooming on their pig, but mainly, it’s washing them and making sure they stay cool. Pigs can get hot very quick, so it’s really important that they are checked regularly, and if we see that they are stressed or hot, we cool them immediately, usually by running cool water on them. Whitey did a real good job walking in the show ring.

Later in the evening, I was able to hang out with my friends and get a funnel cake.

My mom and I pulled goats out so we could work on showmanship maneuvers. In dairy goat, goats have to be walked in certain patterns. I always like to do a refresh before showing.

Then my friend, Brocker, and I worked on sheep showmanship. It’s always good to get the animals out to let them exercise after the crowds are gone.

Wednesday is the sheep show.
