Local legislators recently received appointments to serve on House standing committees at the Statehouse in Indianapolis.

House standing committee appointments are made by the Indiana House speaker biennially after the November election and are in effect for the duration of members’ two-year terms.

District 69 Rep. Jim Lucas, R-Seymour, received an appointment to serve as vice chairman of the veterans affairs and public safety committee and as a member of the local government and public policy committees. District 69 includes most of Jackson County and portions of Bartholomew, Scott and Washington counties.

“As a former Marine, I understand the challenges facing veterans and their families,” Lucas said in a news release. “There is always work to do to further support those who have sacrificed for our country. I remain committed to working with my fellow committee members to better serve those who served our great nation.”

District 62 Rep. Dave Hall, R-Norman, will serve as vice chairman of the utilities, energy and telecommunications committee and as a member of the local government and natural resources committees. District 62 includes all of Brown County, Owen and Salt Creek townships in Jackson County and portions of Monroe County.

“I appreciate the opportunity to use my experience as an REMC director and county official when serving on these committees,” Hall said. “I hope to hear from Hoosiers from all walks of life on what we can do to keep our state moving forward.”

District 65 Rep. Chris May, R-Bedford, received an appointment to serve as chairman of the local government committee and as a member on the natural resources committee.

May said committees are responsible for vetting bills, including hearing public testimony and considering amendments.

“Committees are where a lot of the heavy lifting occurs as far as crafting and evaluating legislation,” he said. “I look forward to diving into issues that matter to Hoosiers and ensuring the voices in our district are heard at the Statehouse.”

District 65 includes all of Lawrence County, Carr Township in Jackson County and portions of Orange and Washington counties.

House lawmakers are scheduled to convene for session at 1:30 p.m. Jan. 9. Hoosiers can visit iga.in.gov to find legislation, view calendars and watch committee meetings and sessions.
