RE/MAX Professionals in Seymour is holding an event this weekend, giving residents an opportunity to give back to the community.

The business, located at 1403 E. Tipton St., is hosting RE/MAX Restock and Recycle from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday.

RE/MAX will be collecting nonperishable food for Community Provisions of Jackson County Inc. in Seymour and hosting a shredding event with Speedy Shred.

Chuck Seybold, co-director of Community Provisions, said they are currently in dire need of canned vegetables and canned fruit.

According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, more than 34 million people, including 9 million children, in the United States are food insecure. Every community in the country has families who face hunger, but rural communities are especially hard hit.

The Feeding America website states that in Indiana, 726,020 people are facing hunger, and 225,750 of those are children. One in seven children in the state face hunger. Many households that experience food insecurity do not qualify for federal nutrition programs and visit their local food banks and other food programs for extra support.

Speedy Shred also will be available Saturday to shred all paper items that people have to drop off. Acceptable items include tax documents, old checks, medical information, invoices, bank statements, receipts and any documents with personal information.

Linzy B’s Bakery will be joining RE/MAX Professionals at Saturday’s event to sell doughnuts. A portion of all doughnut sales that morning will be given to Community Provisions.
