Adult Book Club to meet at Brownstown library

The Adult Book Club plans to meet at 11 a.m. July 15 to discuss “The Four Winds” by Kristin Hannah at the Brownstown Public Library, 120 E. Spring St.

The book is set in Texas in 1934. Millions are out of work, and a drought has broken the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods as the crops fail, the water dries up and dust threatens to bury them all. One of the darkest periods of the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl era, has arrived with a vengeance.

In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa Martinelli — like so many of her neighbors — must make an agonizing choice: Fight for the land she loves or go west to California in search of a better life. The book is an indelible portrait of America and the American dream as seen through the eyes of a woman whose courage and sacrifice will come to define a generation.

The club provides an informal, congenial atmosphere for patrons over 18 to share their literary interpretations of the current book selection. Everyone should read the month’s selection before the meeting but may feel free to attend even if they haven’t finished it if they don’t mind hearing how it ends.

Light refreshments are served by individuals from the group on a volunteer basis. Extra copies of the book selection are available one month in advance at the library circulation desk.

Registration is requested. To register, visit the circulation desk or call the library at 812-358-2853. Karen Raymer will lead the program.
