Brownstown beats Henryville
The Brownstown Central tennis team went on the road to Henryville on Tuesday and secured a 4-1 victory.
Ava McKinney beat Olivia Parmenter 6-4, 6-2 at one singles, and Avery Harrison beat Hannah Mitchell 6-1, 6-4 at three singles.
Hannah Hackman and Chelsea Luedeman won 6-2, 6-1 at one doubles over Kylie Lacy and Kelly Knox, and Bella Brown and Jenna Bolte won 6-0, 6-0 at two doubles against Alexis and Chloe Marion.
Brynn Burton had another three-set battle at two singles, but she lost to Kate Smith 4-6, 6-2, 1-6.
The Braves are now 3-0 to start the season and will play at Austin tonight and host Charlestown on Friday.
Track and field
Braves get thrilling win at Eastern
The Brownstown Central track and field team competed at Eastern (Pekin) on Tuesday, and both the girls and boys had close wins.
The girls team won 66-65. Camryn Thompson won the 100 hurdles in 17.1 and won the 300 hurdles in 53.2.
Paige McKain won the 1600 (6:03), 800 (2:48.6) and 3200 (13:19).
Addie Shelton won shot put with a throw of 31’11” and Zori Otting was third with a 25’10”. The Braves swept discus with Taylor Loudermilk placing first (87’7.5”), Otting second (87’5”) and Shelton third (86’10.5”). Maddy Schepman won high jump at 4’4” and Liberty Wilkins was second at the same height. Schepman also was second in the 200 at 28.9, and Wilkins was third in the 800 at 3:02.
Jazz Yeadon was third in long jump (14’7”) and second in the 400 (1:11), and Madison Stuckwisch was third in the mile (8:05) and third in the two mile (17:07). Kaitlyn McCormick was second in pole vault at 6’6”.
On the boys side, the Braves came away with a 67-65 victory.
First-place finishers were Caleb Cummings in the 100 (11.7) and 200 (24.3), Garrett Driver in the 400 (53.2), Gregory Hutcheson in the 300 hurdles (44.4), Dustyn Kocsis in the shot put (45’0”) and discus (162’9”) and Traven Wellman in the 3200 meter run with a personal-best time of 11:13.
Two relay teams also finished first: The 400-meter relay team of Cummings, Lane Zike, Hudson Fritz and Hutcheson and the 1600-meter relay team of Spencer Penn, Hutcheson, Bradley Edwards and Driver.
Fritz was second in the 1oo hurdles (17.8) and the 100 (12.1), and Zike was third in the 100 (12.2). Edwards was third in the 800 (2:19), and Zike was third in the 2o0 (24.9).
Brayden Millick was third in discus with a throw of 114’11.5”, Cummings was third in high jump at 5’6”, Fritz was third in long jump at 16’1.75” and Landon Wilkins was third in pole vault at 8’0”.
Shane Ratliff and Chance Ratliff went second and third in the mile with times of 5:16 and 5:37, respectively. Shane was third in the two mile in 11:29.8.
After these two exciting wins, the Braves will be back in action tonight at Jennings County with Columbus East at 5 p.m.
Baseball
Trinity falls at West Washington
The Trinity Lutheran baseball team struggled to find offense in the Cougars’ 9-1 loss at West Washington on Tuesday night.
Trinity got one run in the top of the sixth inning off of an RBI from Nathan Voelker that scored Luke Coomler. Coomler and Andrew Bell had the Cougars’ two hits on the night.
Kowan Gross started on the mound and struck out four batters, and Voelker and Sage Broughton each pitched in the game, as well.
Trinity will look to bounce back on Saturday when the Cougars host the Trinity Lutheran Invitational at 9:30 a.m.
