Seymour edges out Franklin Central

Coach Angie Mellencamp says her Seymour gymnastics team is peaking at the right time.

The Owls finished their regular season by edging Franklin 101.0-100.75 at Gymnastics Lane Monday night.

“It was a great team effort,” Mellencamp said as it was the first time the Owls have topped 100 points this season.

The Owls placed first in two events as Lillie Cote won floor exercise with a 9.1, and Piper Hawkins won beam with an 8.6.

“Everyone is trying new things, and if they’re not putting in new moves they’re cleaning up what they’ve got,” Mellencamp said. “Piper’s tumbling was a lot cleaner, and Lillie is cleaning up her (floor) routine.”

Mellencamp was also pleased with Nev Cockerham on beam and Grace Lewis across the board. Cockerham finished fourth in beam with a 7.6 and Lewis was fourth in the all-around.

“(On beam) Nev got her jumps in and stayed on, and Grace is getting more consistent,” Mellencamp said.

Hawkins led the Owls on vault, placing second with a 9.1, and she was third on bars with a 7.7

Mellencamp said everyone on bars has improved, and “Nev is getting her jumps down. Piper landed her front handspring front tuck and this is the second time in competition that she has been scored on that. Ava (Reedy) and Nev are cleaning up their vaults.”

Hawkins was second in all-around with a score of 34.4, Cockerham was third with 32.85 points and Lewis was fourth at 31.85.

The Owls will practice for the sectional at Columbus East, beginning at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Mellencamp said Columbus North and Bloomington North are the top two teams.

She feels her team will be battling for third place.

“Third place is up for grabs,” she said. “There are five or six teams that are close. It will be whoever is hitting that day.”

The Owls will be starting on beam on Saturday.
