Bailey Tabeling reached three milestones for the Trinity Lutheran girls basketball team against Jennings County on Saturday afternoon.

Her second field goal of the afternoon early in the second quarter put her over 1,500 points for her career.

She also topped the 400 mark in career rebounds and the 300 mark in career assists.

Tabeling and her Trinity teammates, however, fell behind Jennings County 20-1 six minutes into the game, and the Panthers left the Bollinger Athletic Complex with a 78-41 win.

Tabeling finished with 13 points and raised her career total to 1,509. She trails her sister, Brittany (1,593), and Sydney Jaynes (1,598) on the Trinity career points list.

“Obviously, 1,500 points is an outstanding accomplishment,” head coach Mike Lang said of Tabeling. “The 1,500 points is an outstanding accomplishment to where she is at her junior year.”

The Panthers took control from the start as Kali Thompson opened the scoring with a 3-pointer and Juliann Woodard followed with a drive to the rim, and it was quickly 5-0.

Liza Froedge hit one free throw for a 5-1 score before the Panthers went on a 15-0 run to lead 20-1. Kailene Cockerham scored the Cougars’ first basket at 2:10.

Jennings County (16-4) built its lead to 26-7 at the end of the first period.

Lang said his team improved its play in the middle two periods, scoring 15 points in the second quarter to trail 43-22 at the half, then added 12 points in the third quarter.

“You can say you’re never going to win or lose a game in the first quarter, but it’s going to dictate the tempo for the rest of the game, and it definitely dictated the tempo for the rest of the game,” Lang said.

Trinity shot 3-for-10 from the floor and committed nine turnovers in the first period, while Jennings County was 9-for-17 from the floor and had three turnovers.

“I thought we settled down in the second quarter and had a good second quarter. I thought we played well through the third quarter,” Lang said. “They just wore us down.”

Jennings County held a 29-15 advantage in rebounds.

Alivia Elmore topped the Panthers with 23 points, Woodard had 21 and Thompson scored 16. Froedge also scored 13 for the Cougars.

“When you’re a team with our size, it’s pick your poison,” Lang said. “Who are you going to try to guard? We knew we had to let someone go if we were going to try to focus on Woodard out of the zone, and their guards hit some shots. This is a top 20 team in the state. They’re really good. I was proud of the kids for not stopping. They played hard the entire time, and that’s what we talked about, trying to put 32 minutes together.”

The Cougars (13-7) will host Christian Academy of Indiana tonight.

“We’re going to finish the season strong,” Lang said. “We knew looking at the end of our schedule and if we could get four out of five games in the main part of our schedule, we would finish strong.”
