The Seymour girls won all three relays to defeat Columbus North 102-84 Thursday night in the Owls’ pool.

The Seymour boys did not have enough depth to match North in the relays, and the visitors won 8 of the 9 individual events to win the meet 122-61.

Olivia Fish helped the Owls win the opening event (the 200 medley relay) and the final event (the 400 free relay), and she placed first in the 50 free in 27.18.

Katya Cox and Maren McClure also had big meets for the Owls. Cox won the 100 back in 1:07.3, and swam on the 200 free and 400 free relays, and McClure placed first in the 200 individual medley in 2:24.06, and first in the 200 and 400 free relays.

Lillian Sunbury and Samantha Jacobi were other members of the 200 free relay team, Jacobi was also on the winning 400 free unit, and Camryn Wilson, Avery Stewart and Isabell Knott were the other members of the winning 200 medley unit.

“It was nice to be in our home pool for a meet,” Owls coach Dave Boggs said after the girls improved to 2-0-1. “That’s kind of tough. Pools are pools like any other sport but it’s nicer to be in your home pool. I think we just have a little more confidence at home. We have a lot of new kids, or kids without much experience, so it really helps them to be in familiar settings.”

Cox said it was good to be home.

“I won three out of my four events. On my backstroke I messed up on my finish. The touch board didn’t pick up the fact that I won,” she said. “I did feel like I had a pretty good meet. It was a pretty close meet. There were many close swims. My 200 was one of those. I got beat by .02, which threw me off a little bit.”

Cox said she likes swimming the spring freestyles the best, such as the 50 and 100, as well as the 100 back. She also thinks the 200 free is her favorite relay because of the fast pace.

“I need to work on my touches on finishes and I need to work on not pushing too hard on the first half of my races because I usually run out of energy,” Cox said.

Boggs said, “I wouldn’t say we swam off much tonight, but we experimented a little bit and tried to get people times in events. We’re trying to see if we can’t find some surprises. We’re still kind of playing around with the order of our relays. I go by personalities, I go by take offs, who had the best flat start. I go by lots of criteria to come up with the best relay possible.

“We swept all three relays on the girls’ side and I was happy to see that. It really came down to that when it was all said and done. We didn’t have any glaring mistakes. We stressed about doing the details better, faster turns. Those were probably the big things we talked about.”

Pedro Cerino Rico placed first place for the boys in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:07.38.

The Owls will swim in the Indianapolis Pike Invitational Saturday, beginning at noon. This will be Seymour’s first time swimming in the 10-team meet.

The meet was not held last year because of COVID-19.
