A Louisville, Kentucky, man has been arrested after admitting to police he had stolen items from a Seymour store about 30 times this year.

Robert Steven Rayborn, 54, faces charges of theft, a Level 6 felony; possession of methamphetamine, a Level 5 felony; and possession of paraphernalia and criminal trespassing, both Class A misdemeanors.

On Thursday, criminal investigators with the Seymour Police Department received a call from an asset protection manager with Home Depot Regional Security advising that an individual who was suspected of stealing merchandise on several occasions was currently inside The Home Depot in Seymour.

The asset protection manager told police the suspect was placing items in a shopping cart, and at one point, the man left the store with items in a cart, according to a news release from SPD Lt. C.J. Foster. Investigators immediately stopped the man and placed him under arrest.

The suspect, identified as Rayborn, was interviewed after being apprehended. He originally used the identity of a now deceased twin brother, Foster said.

Rayborn also admitted to being in The Home Depot in Seymour on Nov. 5 and taking $1,226 in merchandise and again Nov. 10 and attempting to take $2,133 in merchandise. The amount of merchandise Rayborn took when he was apprehended was valued at $746, Foster said.

Investigators also recovered $718 in merchandise from Rayborn’s vehicle that he said was from a previous Home Depot theft. Foster said Rayborn also had items he took from Lowe’s in Madison and JCPenney in Seymour.

Rayborn admitted to investigators that he used the proceeds from the thefts to support a drug habit, and he also admitted to taking items from the Seymour Home Depot approximately 30 times this year, Foster said.

During the investigation, it was determined Rayborn had been warned for criminal trespassing at The Home Depot in May 2021.

Rayborn also was wanted in Clark County for larceny, Boone County, Kentucky, for larceny, and Batavia, Ohio, for a weapon offense.

Rayborn was transported to the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown and booked in at 2:51 p.m. Thursday without bond.
