Police have released more details about the arrest of two Indianapolis men after a robbery at a liquor store Friday afternoon on Seymour’s north side.

The two men, Lawrence D. Green, 33, and Bryant Anthony Edwards, 23, both face preliminary charges of robbery, a Level 3 felony, and resisting law enforcement in connection with the incident that began at Northside Liquors and ended 35 miles away in southern Johnson County.

Green also faces additional preliminary charges of intimidation, reckless driving, resisting law enforcement with a vehicle, a Level 6 felony, and driving while suspended with a prior suspension within 10 years.

According to the police report, eyewitnesses to the robbery said two men arrived at the liquor store at 821 N. Ewing St. around 2 p.m. in a Chevrolet Malibu.

They initially tried to enter the store with gym bags but were told by an employee that bringing them in isn’t allowed, so the men asked for a shopping cart and placed their bags on the front counter.

The men told employees they were shopping for a graduation party for one of their sisters. While shopping, they filled their cart up with expensive tequila, according to an eyewitness, and started checking out at the counter.

After being checked out, the bill for the liquor came to $1,996. The employees working at the time placed the bottles in the gym bags the men had left at the counter.

Green pulled out a “stack of cash” and said it was OK that the total was so high, witnesses told police.

Once the bottles were placed into the bags and some cardboard boxes, the men bumped into a case with 50 ml bottles of alcohol near the front of the store, pushed the shopping cart they were using out of the way, grabbed the bags with alcohol and ran out of the store.

Neither men threatened any employees, demanded money from the register or showed a firearm during the incident, police said.

Green drove the vehicle southbound on Ewing Street away from the store.

When Officer Josh Daniel saw the vehicle turn around in a parking lot and head back north on Ewing Street from Seventh Street, he activated his emergency lights and sirens and tried to initiate a traffic stop.

After the men disregarded the officer’s signals and kept driving, Daniel pursued Green and Edwards with Sgt. Ryan Huddleston and Officer Gilbert Carpenter joining the pursuit.

The pursuit continued north on Ewing Street, also known as State Road 11, to Interstate 65 at Jonesville and then north on the interstate, where officers with other agencies became involved and placed stop devices to stop the Malibu.

The vehicle that Green was driving was traveling at speeds between 100 and 130 mph, according to an incident report.

Near the 85 mile marker, the vehicle drove off of the road after attempting to pass a semitrailer on its right side and near a guardrail.

Green ran from Carpenter and Huddleston as they were trying to pursue him.

After jumping a fence and running across a field, Green complied with orders from Carpenter to stop running, put his hands up and walk backwards toward him.

Daniel caught Edwards as he was trying to leave the vehicle and used a stun gun on him after he resisted being handcuffed.

Both were transported to the Seymour Police Department for questioning and identification. During the interrogation, Edwards confirmed he and Green also committed a similar robbery in Columbus.

Both men were taken to Northside Liquors for identification, where they were positively identified as the suspects of the robbery by eyewitnesses.

Upon conviction, a Level 3 felony carries a sentence of three to 16 years in prison with an advisory sentence of nine years.
