State trooper recognized for 30 years of service

Indiana State Police Maj. David P. Travis recently was recognized for achieving 30 years of service to the department and to the citizens of Indiana.

Originally from Fort Wayne, Travis is a 1984 graduate of the former Elmhurst High School, and in 1988, he earned his bachelor’s degree in aviation from Indiana State University.

On Dec. 9, 1990, he graduated from the 48th Indiana State Police Recruit Academy and was appointed as a trooper and assigned to the Seymour Post, where he served for 19 years and attained the rank of corporal and then first sergeant.

In 2009, Travis transferred to the Sellersburg Post following the closing of the Seymour Post. He was promoted to lieutenant in 2010 and served as the Sellersburg District commander until 2016, when he transferred into the special operations planning section.

In 2017, Travis was promoted captain, where he served as the assistant commander of special operations, and in September 2019, he was promoted to the rank of major. He currently serves as the commander of special operations.

During his career, Travis has served in the following disciplines: Field training officer, tactical intervention platoon, SWAT, clandestine laboratory team and lead firearms instructor for ISP’s recruit academy.

Travis and his wife have four grown children and live in Bartholomew County.
