A seven-point run by Brownstown Central’s boys basketball team late in the third quarter propelled the Braves to a 58-52 victory over Seymour in an intense back-and-forth contest Friday night.

A layup and 3-pointer by BC’s Carter Waskom, along with a couple of free throws by Jack Benter allowed the Braves to turn a one-point deficit into a 41-35 lead as the third quarter ended.

Brownstown built its lead to 10 points midway through the fourth quarter and then used foul shooting to keep the Owls from mounting a serious challenge.

The foul line was BC’s sixth man all night. The Braves finished 29 for 40 from the line on 28 Seymour fouls. During one stretch in the second and third quarters, BC scored 15 of 17 points on free throws.

The Braves went 12 for 20 from the line in the fourth quarter.

Benter led all scorers with 29 points, including 4-for-7 shooting from 3-point range. Waskom followed with 16 point for BC.

Seymour was led by Casey Regruth, who scored 10 of his 16 points in the second half. Landon Fritsch followed with 13, while Eli Meyer added nine for the Owls.

Friday’s win is Brownstown’s 13th straight over Seymour, a winning streak that extends back to 2008.

Seymour opened the game with four straight points to take the early lead before Brownstown heated up.

Benter announced his presence with an impressive Steph Curry-like, NBA-length 3-pointer to give the Braves their first bucket. That shot sparked the Braves, who scored 16 unanswered points to open a 16-4 advantage with 2:10 left in the first quarter.

Seymour countered with sophomore Meyer, who scored seven points during an 11-3 Owl run that closed the gap to 19-15.

A driving layup by Fritch and a jumper in the lane by Regruth pulled Seymour to within 25-23 with two minutes left in the first half. But Brownstown, which scored all nine of its second-quarter points from the foul line, stayed a step ahead of the Owls.

Friday’s competition started with an epic quadruple-overtime junior varsity contest that saw the Braves finally prevail, 61-60. The two squads finished regulation tied at 45, and then just kept going.

Seymour’s JV led by as many as 15 points before Brownstown staged a fourth-quarter comeback. Each team appeared ready to claim victory during the extra time but neither could secure the win until Trapper Dean’s jumper in the lane with just 20 seconds left in the fourth OT proved to be decisive.

Bret Perry scored 20 points for the Owls’ JV before fouling out. Evan Smith poured in 13 points while Will Cottrill scored seven on clutch OT shooting.

Brownstown’s JV was paced by Jakob Arthur’s 20 points. Quentin Tiemeyer (six points) and Hudson Fritz (nine) displayed their cool under pressure in overtime for the Braves, hitting key 3-pointers and gotta-have-‘em free throws.
