Former teacher, coach arrested for child seduction

A former Seymour High School teacher and coach has been arrested for having an inappropriate relationship with a student that resulted in pregnancy, police reported Wednesday.

The investigation into Todd A. Weaver, 50, of Waldron began Sept. 24 after the former student gave birth Sept. 21, according to a news release from the Seymour Police Department.

Officers with SPD and Seymour Community School Corp. school resource officers conducted interviews and obtained warrants for cellphone records and collected DNA from Weaver, the student and the child so a paternity test could be administered.

Police received results of that test from the Indiana State Police Lab on Nov. 13. Based on the results, SPD with assistance from the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department arrested Weaver on Tuesday. He faces one count of child seduction, a Level 5 felony.

The charge stems from Weaver being in a position of authority as a teacher and having an inappropriate relationship with a student under the age of 18, said SPD Lt. C.J. Foster.

Seymour Community School Corp. placed Weaver on administrative leave Sept. 22 pending the outcome of an internal and criminal investigation. He never returned to work.

“We were made aware of allegations and immediately notified the Department of Child Protective Services and Seymour Police Department,” Superintendent Brandon Harpe said.

Last Tuesday, the school board approved Weaver’s resignation as a teacher and wrestling coach.

“Mr. Weaver is no longer employed by Seymour Community School Corp., and his case has been referred to the Indiana Department of Education for review,” Harpe said.

“The immediate action by Seymour Community Schools administration officials and Seymour High School officials protected students, faculty and staff so learning could continue in a safe environment without further disruptions,” Foster said.

Weaver was transported to the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown and was booked in at 4:50 p.m. Tuesday without bond.

The investigation is ongoing, Foster said.
