Blood drive in honor of former mayor planned

A blood drive in memory of former Seymour Mayor John Burkhart is set for for 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 23 at Seymour City Hall, 301-309 N. Chestnut St.

The city is conducting the drive in conjunction with Versiti Blood Center of Indiana.

To schedule a donation, call Jane Hays at 812-522-4020 or visit the city’s Facebook page for a link to the Versiti mobile drive schedule.

Burkhart, who died Dec. 13, 2019, at 80, was appointed mayor in November 1990 after Mayor Bill Bailey was elected District 66 state representative. After completing Bailey’s term, Burkhart served three more terms as mayor.

Born at Schneck Medical Center, he was the eldest of three sons of Charles A. and Susie J. Burkhart. On Feb. 23, 1958, John married Dottie at First United Methodist Church in Seymour. They were married for 62 years.

In 1959, John started his career with Cummins Engine Co. as a shop hourly employee de-burring injector bodies and ending as the facilities manager at Cummins Industrial Center in Seymour.
