We’ve been exploring some of the key principles of a powerful friendship.

We’re learning from the example of two iconic friends, David and Jonathan. Their story is found in the book of 1 Samuel.

There are so many positive lessons we can learn from their example. Both men were blessed to have the other in their life. Both were fortunate to have a friend who loved them enough to speak truth into their life.

David and Jonathan were forced to part ways because of Jonathan’s father, King Saul. Because of his own jealousy and insecurity, Saul was out to kill David. When Jonathan was made aware of his father’s plans, he was willing to do whatever he could to help his friend, David.

Jonathan and David experienced a forever bond that is rare for friends to experience these days. They loved each other deeply.

We all long for faithful friends. Proverbs 18:24 tells us, “There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother.” Jesus Christ wants to be that kind of friend to you.

Have you established a personal relationship with him? Are you willing to take some time to get to know him through prayer and the study of his Word? That is the best way to see for yourself if he is the kind of friend you need.

That’s what happened to a guy named Nathaniel in John 1:43-51. His buddy, Phillip, was telling him all about Jesus, but Nathaniel was skeptical. He had his doubts. How do you know this guy is who he says he is? How do you know that Jesus is the son of God?

I love Philip’s response. He said, “I don’t know. I can’t answer all your questions.” Then he said something that is so brilliant: “Just come and see. Why don’t you just come and hang out with Jesus and see for yourself.” I want to extend that same invitation to you today.

Would you be willing to begin a friendship with Jesus today? What I mean by that is would you be willing to try to get to know him through his Word? Would you be willing to study his life and see what he said and did in an attempt to understand who he is?

My guess is that the closer you get, the better he looks. I truly do believe a relationship with Jesus will make your life better. It will also make you better at life.
