Police said a two siblings did the right thing when they reported a man broke into their family’s home late Sunday night.
The youths, who are 15 and 12, called police at 11:41 p.m. to report the they heard someone in their home on Marley Lane.
When Cpl. Jacob Florine and Officer Crystal Schapson arrived, they found Shawn Michael Simmons, 31, of Seymour in the backyard, Seymour Assistant Police Chief Craig Hayes said.
Hayes said Simmons was found in the yard with latex gloves on his hands and a small flashlight. Officers also noticed that a patio table had been moved near a window that was left open.
Hayes said the siblings heard Simmons enter the home, and they went to a bedroom and called police. He said the two tried to keep as quiet as possible during the incident.
"They did the right thing, because they got somewhere safe and immediately called police," Hayes said.
The youths told police that was what their parents told them to do in those cases. The parents were working when the incident took place, but returned to the residence.
Simmons faces a preliminary Level 4 felony charge of burglary and a Level 6 felony charge of residential entry. He also faces a misdemeanor charge of criminal trespassing.
Simmons was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 1:32 a.m. Monday and is being held without bond pending his initial hearing.
A Level 4 felony is punishable between two and 12 years upon conviction. The advisory sentence is six years.
