A Seymour man was arrested after police said he battered and strangled a woman before fleeing Sunday evening.

Jesus Mannuel Garcia, 25, faces a preliminary Level 6 felony charge of strangulation and a Class A misdemeanor charge of battery after an incident reported to Seymour police.

Garcia also faces preliminary Class A misdemeanor charges of possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia.

Assistant Police Chief Craig Hayes said officers were called at 7:32 p.m. to the 600 block of Mill Street on a report that a domestic incident had taken place.

A woman told police Garcia showed up to her residence intoxicated and started arguing with her. Garcia and the woman were in a relationship, police said.

Hayes said the argument escalated, and Garcia choked and battered the woman and left the residence.

When police arrived, they found the woman had injuries consistent with what she had reported to police.

Garcia was found in the 100 block of South O’Brien Street, where they also found him in possession of marijuana.

Officers Michael Payne and Devlin McMindes responded to the incident.

Garcia was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 8:33 p.m. Sunday without bond pending his initial hearing.

A Level 6 felony is punishable between six months and two and a half years in jail upon conviction. The advisory sentence is one year.
