A 43-year-old Crothersville man faces three charges related to a domestic incident Saturday evening, according to court documents.
Christopher D. Johnson was arrested by Crothersville police after they said he battered a woman at an intersection on the town’s west side.
Johnson faces a preliminary Level 6 felony charge of criminal confinement and preliminary Class A misdemeanor charges of domestic battery and intimidation.
The incident that led to Johnson’s arrest began when Officer Alan Jones was called to a fight in the area of 500 W. Main St.
Jones wrote in a probable cause affidavit filed Monday in Jackson Circuit Court that he saw Johnson and a woman walking away from each other at Park Street and Rider Avenue when he arrived.
The woman told police she and Johnson had a disagreement at a bar, where they each threw a beer at each other before the woman left on foot, according to court documents.
Johnson followed her, and the argument became physical. The woman told police she believed Johnson was trying to calm her down when things escalated, but she had smacked him in the face a few times during the incident, police said.
When Jones arrived, Johnson told him that someone had hit him in the mouth.
Jones said in the report he saw two other men in the area, and one of those men said they saw Johnson battering a woman and intervened when questioned by police.
The man told Jones he was going to try to break the fight up when Johnson shoved him and the man hit Johnson, according to court documents. The witness also said Johnson smelled of alcohol.
The man told Jones the woman then took off before Johnson caught back up with her and started battering her again.
Witnesses said Johnson had hit her, put her in a headlock, slung her around and knocked her down. The woman told police she did not believe she was in a headlock but that it could have appeared that way when she tried to spin away from Jonson and leave.
When interviewed by police, Johnson admitted to preventing the woman from walking away once or twice.
Johnson was booked into the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown at 9:56 p.m. without bond pending his initial hearing.
A Level 6 felony is punishable between six months and a two and a half years upon conviction.
