Yonelson Alvarez scored two goals in each half to help the Christian Academy of Indiana boys soccer team defeat Trinity Lutheran 5-3 Tuesday night on the Cougars’ field.
Both teams missed some excellent scoring opportunities early before CAI’s James Doherty scored at 34:30 and the Warriors were in front to stay.
Alvarez scored his first goal at 14:01 for a 2-0 lead for the visitors.

Zephyr Wilson received the ball from Kash Siefker near midfield on Trinity’s next possession and beat his defender and the goalie down the right side of the net and scored for a 2-1 contest with 13:35 remaining until half.
Alvarez gave his team a 3-1 lead at 7:58 before Kaleb Baumgartel scored unassisted for the Cougars at 4:58 to make it a 3-2 game at the half.
Trinity Coach Joe Doggett said with his team having a shortage (14) of players, some of them have to move around on the field and are forced to play positions they are not familiar with.
“We have players that are trying a lot of different positions, and some of them don’t know exactly where to play when we change them up. We don’t have a lot of subs so we have to play them in different positions and spell guys," he said. “When they’re learning multiple positions it’s kind of tough to cover where you’re supposed to be. We had some mistakes, some mental errors but we’re playing almost everybody the full 80 minutes.”
Alvarez helped the Warriors (2-2-1) regain a 2-goal advantage at 27:02 of the second half.
Jacob Sabotin matched that goal, with an assist from Micah Baumgartel at 10:39 to close the difference to 4-3 but Alvarez came right back with his fourth score at 9:13 to complete the scoring.
Doggett said, “We’re looking much better than what we started with. This team was more like our caliber because they only had two or three subs. We played some teams, like Oldenburg that had 30 players.
“I’m real happy with them, a lot of good individual efforts. Jacob Sabotin played well, our goalie (Brayden Stockleman) had the best game he’s ever had since I’ve been here. He’s learning every day.
“Micah Baumgartel had a good game. Josh Rowe, who didn’t play soccer, he played football all those years, until his senior year, he has learned it really quickly and did a nice job as a defensive back.
“The whole team, is playing better and the kids are starting to step up and play better.”
The Cougars attempted 17 shots and the Warriors tried 26.
The Cougars get back to it on Thursday at 5 p.m. against Hauser.
