Police recovered the 9 mm handgun used in a shooting that left a 44-year-old Seymour man injured Saturday evening.

Seymour Police Chief Bill Abbott said officers found the gun in a grassy area along Burkart Boulevard on Sunday.

The gun was found with the help of a K-9 officer with Indiana conservation officers.

"The DNR has a K-9 trained to track gunpowder residue," Abbott said.

He said officers had been searching the area Sunday afternoon, but the dog found it a few minutes after arriving on scene.

Police said Cory Pollard, 39, of Seymour, who is being held at the Jackson County Jail in Brownstown on an attempted murder charge, threw the gun after he left the scene of the shooting at Tipton and O’Brien streets.

Abbott said Pollard shot Deldrake Ealy around 8:55 p.m. after the two were arguing and shoving each other in a black sport utility vehicle stopped at the intersection.

Ealy was shot once in the left lower abdomen as he left the vehicle. He then walked into Orange Leaf, 524 E. Tipton St., and told people he had been shot, officers said.

Police recovered the bullet and shell casing from the scene.

An update on his condition was not available, but he was airlifted to University of Louisville Hospital following the incident.

A witness who reported the incident stayed on the phone with dispatchers, Abbott said, and followed Pollard to Burkart Crossing Apartments, 1021 Stoneridge Drive, where police were able to take him into custody shortly after 9 p.m.

Pollard declined to speak with officers before he was taken to the jail, where he was being held without bond. He was booked in at 10:54 p.m.
