Choices
Thumbs-up to all of the candidates who will appear on the Nov. 5 ballot for city elections. There are contested races for mayor, clerk-treasurer, two at-large council seats and all but one of the five district council seats in Seymour. The ballot, which includes six third party candidates, gives voters multiple choices when they head to the polls, which is much better than elections in recent years. Some of those have had no races for mayor and clerk-treasurer and very few council races.
Moving on
Thumbs-up to Gloria Quicksell, who is retiring from Head Start on July 26 after 36 years of service to the organization that helps children of low-income families learn, grow and play. Over the years, the 74-year-old woman has served the {span}U.S. Department of Health and Human Services program at centers in Seymour, Shelbyville, Franklin, Columbus and Brown County as a bus driver, teacher and family advocate.

Bowling with the best
Thumbs-up to the Seymour High School boys bowling team, which recently competed in the U.S. High School Bowling National Championship at Expo Bowl in Indianapolis. Team members are Andre Sides, Luke Lanam, Kenny Kelly, Trevor Lawson, Trace Cooper-Benson and Colton Hayes. The team, coached by Shannon Kelly with the help of assistant coach Ed Sides, finished 41st overall with a score of 3,161 pins.
Controversial
decisionThumbs-down to everyone who has complained about a recent decision by officials with Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1925 in Seymour to cancel the annual V-J Day Parade. Support for the parade has been waning in recent years with fewer spectators, entries and volunteers to make what was thought to be the oldest consecutive V-J Day Parade in the country happen. Where were those people in recent years when the parade was being planned and conducted? Fortunately, the VFW will have a V-J Day service open to the public Aug. 11 at the post, 311 S. Jackson Park Drive, Seymour. A meal will be served from 1 to 3 p.m., followed by a guest speaker and the honor guard salute at 3:30 p.m. A band will perform at the post that night.
