sacrificeThumbs-up to those involved in making sure the rest of us don’t forget the true meaning of Memorial Day, which is to remember those who died while serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. That includes the veterans and others who organize Memorial Day services in Brownstown and Seymour and those who decorate the graves of the thousands of veterans in the county with flags each year during the week before Memorial Day.

Graduates

Thumbs-up to the hundreds of Jackson County students who have graduated from universities, colleges and trade schools or completed their military training this spring. A related thumbs-up to our high school graduates, including Brownstown Central’s 130; the 26 from Crothersville; Medora’s 16; Seymour High School’s 332; and the 31 from Trinity Lutheran.

Sectional champs

Thumbs-up to members of the Seymour High School girls tennis team for capturing the school’s 20th sectional title by defeating Brownstown Central 4-1 on Saturday. The team, coached by Jan Fenton, featured Sandra Cerino at No. 1 singles, Peyton Levine at No. 2 singles, Kirby Hill at No. 3 singles, Mallory Moore and Kristina Griffin at No. 1 doubles and Avery Ragon and Madalyn Baurle at No. 2 singles.

Thumbs-up to all of the athletes from Jackson County who finished in the top three at the girls and boys sectionals last week, including those who won their events. The list of sectional champions includes Seymour’s Ashton Chase in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter runs. She also was a member of the Owls’ 4×800 meter relay sectional championship team that included Brett Kleber, Samantha Jacobi and Makenna Sunbury. The only other county girl to win a sectional title at Seymour was Crothersville’s Kaylyn Holman in the 800-meter run. Boys winning sectional titles were Brownstown Central’s Caleb Bollinger in the pole vault and Derek Thompson in the 200-meter dash and Seymour’s Haden Mettert in the shot put.

A hand up

Thumbs-up to Joe Wright of Seymour, who wants to pay off the outstanding school lunch bill for students attending Seymour Community Schools with the help of the community. He needs to raise $900, so he will be doing a dollar-for-dollar match up to $450. Wright also plans to use any excess funds raised to pay off the outstanding lunch bills at the other public school corporations in Jackson County. The negative balances are nearly $680 for Brownstown Central, $180 for Medora and $80 for Crothersville.
