Over the past four years, Ashton Chase has made her name known throughout the Indiana running community.

In her final track and field meet at Bulleit Stadium, Chase set a new bar for future runners.

The Seymour High School senior won the 1,600, 3,200 and also helped the Owls’ 4×800 relay claim first in sectional action Tuesday.

To Owls coach Spencer Sunbury’s knowledge, Chase is the first girls track and field runner to win both the 1,600 and 3,200 all four years in a career.

Chase won the 1,600 in 5 minutes, 7.30 seconds, — 33 seconds better than second place, and seven-tenths off the school record — and the 3,200 in 11:43.45.

Jennings County won the sectional for the second straight year by scoring 125.5 points, Seymour (114) was runners-up, Springs Valley (90.5) finished third, Bedford North Lawrence (84.5) placed fourth and Brownstown Central (68.5) took fifth. Mitchell (39), Eastern (31), Crothersville (27.5), Paoli (17), Salem (13), West Washington (6), Orleans (3.5) and Trinity Lutheran followed.

Athletes placing in the top three for each individual event qualified for Tuesday’s Bloomington North Regional.

The Owls opened the meet by dominating the 4×800 relay, as Brett Kleber, Samantha Jacobi, Makenna Sunbury and Chase clocked 10:14.19. SHS advanced to state last year in the event, with Sunbury and Chase returning from that relay squad.

Owls sophomore Lara Skaggs moved on in two events, placing third in the long jump (16 feet, 3 1/4 inches) and second for the 100 hurdles (16.86).

Avery DeHart’s clearance of 9-3 was good for runner-up in the pole vault and Hayley Harpe’s time of 1:03.90 placed her third in the 400.

The SHS 4×100 relay team of Jamya Miller, Kaleigh Maschino, Jalen Snider and Zoe Plummer placed third in 5:13.

Crothersville freshman Kaylyn Holman was the sectional champion in the 800, with a time of 2:32.24, and also qualified for regional in the 1,600 by finishing second overall (5:40.05).

Brownstown Central junior Ashley Schroer was runner-up in both the shot put and discus, recording throws of 36-11 1/4 and 115-1 to keep her season alive. Jennings County’s Kayla Truesdell won both events.

The Braves’ Brooklyn Snodgrass was third in the pole vault (9-0), 100 (12.94), and 200 on the day. Snodgrass will aim to advance to state in the 100 for a fourth straight year Tuesday.

Kaelyn Johnson moved on in the 3,200 for the Braves, taking third in 12:45.29.

Trinity’s 4×400 relay team of Ruthie Bingham, Mya Lindroth, Emma Goecker and Kaelyn Miller was eighth in 4:57.66. Goecker also scored for the Cougars in the 3,200, finishing seventh in 14:12.71.

Top three finishers at the regional next week will advance to the state finals at Indiana University on June 1.
