Here’s the latest on the winter weather predicted for tonight

Jackson County officials are anticipating winter weather overnight, and predictions indicate it could be the first significant snowfall so far this winter.

Duane Davis, director of the Jackson County Emergency Management Agency, said the National Weather Service in Indianapolis has issued a winter storm warning from late Friday to early Sunday.

Four to seven inches of snowfall has been predicted during that period.

“That could range anywhere in between, but that’s how it looks for our area now,” Davis said Thursday.

A winter storm watch means there is potential for significant snow, sleet or ice accumulations that may impact travel.

Davis said the Jackson County Highway Department began treating roads Thursday in preparation for the weather and will have crews ready this weekend. Preparations will continue today, too, Davis said.

“They have over 700 miles of county roads to work, and they only have so many trucks,” he said.

Davis said while the amount of snow predicted is not that high, residents should use caution if they travel or clear their property.

“Patience is key if you’re traveling,” Davis said.

He said motorists should allow for extra time and use caution while driving as conditions worsen.

Davis said the amount of snow predicted also will mean more residents will remove snow.

“You should do it in spurts and not overdo it,” he said.

Davis said many people have medical conditions that can be aggravated by the physical exertion of clearing driveways and sidewalks.

“What’s the hurry? Just take your time if you plan to remove it yourself,” he said.

Davis said the county is behind on its average snowfall for this time of the year, as it usually experiences more at this point. He said he thinks this round of snowfall could begin the winter weather period for the year.

While the snow period may be beginning, Davis said he does not expect this round to last long.

“Temperatures are supposed to rebound next week, so it won’t be long,” he said.
