She was born in Seymour on April 6, 1929, to the late Louis and Louisa Kasting Koop.

She was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church. On May 1, 1949, she married Erwin Surenkamp, who preceded her in death March 10, 2009. Erwin and Marietta ran the preschool Sunday school class for more than 30 years.

In her early years, she enjoyed working her flower gardens. She was an artist and had paintings across the United States, both pen and ink and oil paints. She was a member of Southern Indiana Center for the Arts. She also enjoyed quilting.

Marietta was a proud farm wife and would often brag on how many bales of hay she did each year. She and Erwin were very active in Farm Bureau and attended both local and district events. They also were recognized by the Indiana Foundation of FFA as both donors and members of the Advisors Club.
