When the final round of her career had come to a close, Brownstown Central senior KaCee Collins fought back tears.

The emotion wasn’t because her time on the links as a Brave was over but because of what she had accomplished on her final 18 holes.

At Country Oaks Golf Club in Washington Regional competition, Collins carded a 12-over-par 84.

That score shattered her previous personal best by 16 strokes and finished one stroke shy of advancing to this weekend’s state tournament at Prairie View Golf Club in Carmel.

“I had never broken 100 before. Breaking 90, too … I’m just speechless,” Collins said. “I’m in awe. Everything was working but my putts. I had a lot of fun today. I love playing in the rain. I don’t know why. It just adds a little extra to my game.”

All of the golfers endured miserable weather conditions all day long, as it rained from start to finish.

Due to a slow pace of play, the tournament, which started the first group 8:30 a.m., didn’t conclude until almost 6:30 p.m.

Some golfers logged rounds of almost seven hours.

Brownstown coach Brandon Allman was thrilled with Collins’ performance.

“I’m extremely proud. I don’t think she mishit one shot,” he said. “She hit 10 greens in regulation. The only part where she struggled was that she had 40 putts. Words can’t describe how proud I am.”

Collins’ sophomore teammate, Ashlyn Fox, also had a good day as an individual, as she shot a career-best 105.

“Ashlyn also shot her best round ever. In these conditions, it was really tough. Ashlyn was sopping wet from the rain. I’m very proud of the mental toughness by both girls,” Allman said.

In team scoring, Evansville North won its fifth straight regional title by scoring a 315.

North had two players shoot 77 with Kaelyn Skinner coming out on top after a playoff hole for individual medalist honors.

Evansville Memorial finished runner-up of 18 teams with a 341, and Bedford North Lawrence took the final state-advancing spot by shooting 342. Martsinville (346) placed fourth, Gibson Southern (358) finished fifth and Seymour and Floyd Central tied for sixth (365).

“It rained from start to finish, and the conditions led to higher scores,” Seymour coach Jim Hoffman said. “Evansville North was shooting in the 280s this season and finished with 315. We had an outstanding day. We beat some of the schools we wanted to beat. We wanted to get in the mix, and we were in it. They were tough and fought through it.”

Laken Waskom led Seymour with an 87, Kara Rice shot a personal-best 89, Bridget Marshall carded 90 and Rylee Knutson shot 137 for Seymour.

“Where we started and where we finished is just great progress,” Hoffman said. “We’ve gotten better and done some really good things.”

Seymour will graduate Rice, Wisler, and Lexi York from the program.

“(The seniors) have meant a lot,” Hoffman said. “They have character. Every team that we play with wants to play with us, and I think that says a lot about the girls. Every coach says they love our kids, and that makes me feel really good. It’s a big compliment to the girls and to Seymour.”

Collins was the lone senior for BCHS.

The make up of the individuals moving on to state from non-advancing teams included three cards of 81 and two 83s.

The state finals will be held over the course of Friday and Saturday with 36 total holes to be played.
