Jackson County voters decided Tuesday to give a Freetown man a chance at winning a third term as the District 3 county commissioner.

Incumbent Matt Reedy, a Republican, won the party’s nomination for the Nov. 6 general election by defeating political newcomer Roger Bane in the primary.

Bane, a Medora resident and superintendent of Medora Community School Corp., claimed 2,371 votes or 38 percent of those cast, while Reedy collected 3,819 votes or 62 percent of the ballots cast.

Democrats, who did not have a candidate for the District 3 commissioners seat in the primary, have until noon June 30 to fill that general ballot vacancy.

Bane said he knew it was going to be hard to beat Reedy.

“This is his third time (running for commissioner),” Bane said.

“He got a lot of votes. It was a good opportunity for me to give it a try.”

Reedy said he appreciated the citizens of Jackson County were willing to put him up for another term.

Bane said he definitely plans to run for the seat again in four years.

“I learned some things and will try some different things the next time,” he said. “It was a good experience.”

District 3 spans Carr, Owen, Pershing and Salt Creek townships in the western part of the county.

The District 1 and District 2 seats won’t come up for election until 2020. Commissioners are elected by voters from across the county.
